Advocate is a spot-on insecticide treatment which comes in a liquid form and is applied to the skin on the back of the animal’s neck. It is a yellow-brown solution which contains the active ingredients imidacloprid and moxidectin and it is used to treat a range of parasites in dogs, cats and ferrets.

What is Advocate used for?

Advocate is used to treat and prevent fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) in both dogs and cats and can be used as part of a routine treatment regime for flea allergic dermatitis (FAD). Advocate is also used to treat against ear mites (Otodectes cyanotis) and can be used in the prevention of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) and several intestinal worms in dogs and cats including roundworm, heartworm, lungworm and whipworm. These worms are also known by their scientific Latin names: Ancylostoma spp, Toxocara spp, Uncinaria stenocephala and Trichuris vulpis.

In dogs specifically, Advocate can be used to treat biting lice (Trichodectes canis), sarcoptic mange caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabeii and demodecosis, a skin disease caused by another mite Demodex canis.

In ferrets, Advocate is used to treat and prevent fleas and also to prevent heartworm.

The dosing regimen for each specific parasite is as follows:

Fleas: One pipette every 4 weeks in dogs and cats to treat and then prevent recurrence. In ferrets one pipette is needed every 3 weeks and can be given every 2 weeks if there is a large burden of fleas

Ear mites: A single dose is usually enough to treat ear mites but a recheck with your vet is advised after a month as a further dose may be needed.

Lice: A single dose will kill most biting lice but a second dose may be required a month later so a recheck with your vet is advised.

Sarcoptes: 2 doses, 4 weeks apart are needed to treat sarcoptic mange

Demodex: A dose of Advocate monthly for 2-4 months is usually needed to treat demodecosis but treatment should be continued until 2 consecutive skin scrapes have tested negative for the demodex mite.

Heartworm: Advocate should be given monthly throughout the mosquito season as heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes. Advocate should be started at least a month before the season starts.

Roundworms: In both cats and dogs, Advocate should be applied monthly to treat and prevent intestinal roundworms.
